Rise

7am

Our battles are small, summer rains and winter days

Silence

I love them all, you hate them all

No blood drawn

Some mornings are rough I don’t like alarms much

No, I press them over and over again

‘Til you plead

CHORUS

I hate your rizzlin’

I hate your constant fight

To keep a last sleepy grasp on a dying night

You hate transitions

Why is it so, so wrong to simply move the day along,

and when it’s time to rise just rise?

There’s something here it’s final shap ain’t really clear

You spoke of changes, I hate them all, you love them all

‘Til you plead

CHORUS

Night into day, moon to the sun

Work into play years wrap around everyone

Storm into clam, stars fade to blue

Fist to the palm, mouths stretching between me and you

Words into whips, jokes into strikes

Fires rise quick, battles through silent nights

Anger to peace, hands lock on hands

Signal retreat, faith pulling you close to me

CHORUS

Lid Mountain

8am

LID MOUTAIN 2 .JPG

My heels tap out morse code

To send an SOS to other heels that fill the road

And their dots and dashes scream their screams

CHORUS

And I’m building that mountain a step at a time

Stretching my legs to climb

Scaling that mountain a dream at a time

Stacking nest eggs in line

Stepping and slipping and buzzing and bouncing

Straight up that mountain in time

My nails tap out these scripts

Paragraphs of wit

These morning hours dream my dreams

CHORUS

These clocks chop up my days

The ticks and tocks lock me to this place

And their hands wave about their face

Demanding that I try to keep their place

CHORUS

Superhero

10am

Doreen Green is a temp I’ve seen

Calling lonely customers about phone lines

‘Course secretly she’s Squirrel Girl

Has a band with Tippy Toe and Monkey Joe,

She’s gunna blow our minds

So let’s grab our capes,

And plot our escapes

From our daily planets

CHORUS

We’re all superheroes

We fight superpowers

Don’t judge us by our mild mannered ways.

Let’s circle our worlds for more of those heroes

Hiding under mild manners days

I’m Red Sonya who might phone ya

‘Bout your feedback on our product range

Of course secretly I’m a Viking Star

With a beat up guitar and a red tip jar

And I’m going far far away

So let’s grab our capes,

And plot our escapes

From our daily planets

CHORUS

Please, Doreen don’t give up on this

Please, Doreen don’t give up on this

You help to me to hope that this daily planet life leads somewhere

You help to me to hope that this daily planet life leads somewhere

You’re all green screens where I can project myself

You’re all green screens that let me  project myself

One day a parent picks up their child for the very, very, very last time

One day a superhero grabs her cape for the very, very, very, last time

Let’s hope it’s not today

CHORUS

We’re all superheroes.

Slow Steps

12pm

SLOW STEPS .JPG

Time to arm, time to hurt

Time to shout, to shout

Time to quickly cut,

Time to quickly harm

CHORUS

But Jenny says slow steps,

Stop word foggin’ slow steps,

Stop thought loggin’ and step it back girl,

step it back girl

Until you can win, it’s best you defend

And step it back girl, step it back girl

Raise the alarm, loudly scream

Shout them down, storm their halls

These times call out to quickly cut

These times call out to quickly harm

These times call out to double down, double down

These times call out to double down, double down

CHORUS

She’s coming down, coming down

They’re taking our world

Let’s give it away

And build something new

CHORUS

Follow The Sun

2pm

She follows the sun

She moves from room to room to room

Until the light is done

So many faces in untouched places

The sun finds her or she follows the sun

I need her warmth

A mother’s mother’s shoulder

I curse the sun,

Rotations make her older

I call her each day at two

When she goes not sure what I’ll do at two.

The sun ignites her and she lights us all

I’m colder than deep space ‘til I make my call

The sun invites to warm us all

I’m colder than deep space ‘til I make my call

St Mary's

4pm

ST MARYS .JPG

Weekday afternoons bend time

And stretch it round my sleepy head

Til I’m drooling on my keyboard bed

Weekday afternoons and I ain’t seeing eye to eye.

Who said time flies? It don’t even try

So it happens that I’m napping and I’m jumping the moon

With the clouds and the kittens and spoons

And I’ll dance with the diddles and fly with the fiddles

Dreaming through weekday afternoons

I’m in St. Mary’s Parish Hall

Mama’s lacing up my skates,

Tragedy’s bouncing off the walls

I’m at St. Mary’s Parish Hall

Jacob stole the candles from my cake

He’s so funny strange and small

I’m at St Mary’s Parish Hall

Picking each other up with every fall

I would’ve sworn we had it all

Lost days on roller skates

Lost days on roller skates

Jacob's Prayer

5pm

You moonwalk through weddings

Grabbing Grandma’s smile with a wink and a wave

You sneak beers to cousins

Telling aunts and uncles that their kids slipped away

To you room to watch Babe

And you took their secrets to your grave

CHORUS

Oh Jacob I got some prayers for you

Oh Jacob I got some mending to do

And I still can’t get my head around you leaving

You Jesus this and that

Grabbing Grandma’s faith with a hint and a song

You say you’re born again

Telling your own family that we ought to come along

To your church and its songs

And you stripped our souls

CHORUS

And I pray you’re safe

And I pray you didn’t mean to do it

And I pray you’re whole

And I pray your devil pulled the trigger

I pray you’re here

To watch over me

And moonwalk through my wedding

Grabbing Grandma’s smile with a wink and a wave

CHORUS

Madeline

7pm

I’m at the bridge between my work and him

And I need an hour before his reign begins

I make the call some gather some dear friends

And within the hour we’ll start our measurements

Best stop at the toll house

One stop at the toll house

Best stop at the toll house

One stop before I cross

CHORUS

I’m propped up by Madeline

She’s telling her history

Confessing my Madeline

So I can feel better about me

Strong rivers rage against the bridges’ piers

And in just an hour

We’ll drown each span in tears

Best stop at the toll house

One stop at the toll house

Best stop at the toll house

One stop before I cross

CHORUS

I’m strengthened by Madeline

Tellin her miseries

She’s revealing all Madeline

So I can feel better about me

Just another Madline, just another tale

Please remember Madeline, I grow from each detail

Just another Madeline,

I love you so dear Madeline I’m measured on your scales

And I’ll confess these sessions never fail to amuse me,

To help me cross home.

You Ask

9pm

You ask what’s been the colour of my day

You ask “is there a way to turn it blue?”

Brighter, brighter I’ll paint

Surrounding me with colours of you

Surrounding me with colours of you.

You ask when I’ll surrender to this thing

This thing you think is happening to me

Tighter, tighter we’ll be wrapped in its mystery

Trapped in shaded histories

CHORUS

‘Cause the harder you pull my push keeps getting harder,

You keep raising the roof and I’ve gotta bring the roof down

The softer you ask my answers come much harder

You keep raising the roof and I gotta bring the roof down on us all.

You ask why you’re always on thin ice.

You ask why I’m always pushing you from shore.

Farther, farther I’ll pray ‘til you’re not supported anymore

And you’ll slide frozen through the door

CHORUS

And I suppose there's method in my madness

And I suppose there’s something good in all the sadness I create

And I suppose as I sift through all this rubble]

There must be something in the trouble I create.

It’s the sadness that I love to hate.

Rafael's Time

10pm

RAFAEL .JPG

My St Rafael’s statue

In the moonlight near your trees

With lichen painted hands

Palms pressing, praying plaintively

I gave you those maples the day you gave those hands to me.

My St Rafael’s statue watch your Japanese maple’s rise

Each chapter of our lives chiselled on lichen painted eyes,

He guards the garden

Soberly standing ‘neath summer skies.

CHORUS

‘Cause we can’t measure love by the hour

We can’t be keeping daily scores.

No we can’t measure love by the hour

This thing we’ve got needs more than second guessing

Or messing with Rafael’s time

You be you and mine

And I’ll be me and yours this time

Your Japanese maple’s protect St Rafael’s statue

Their lichen painted coats shimmer with the colours of you.

Time moves slowly

This thing demands a very long view.

His hands our hands

Your trees our trees

His eyes our eyes

CHORUS

And I’m liking lichen

The pairing of fungi and algae,

You be the fungi I’ll be the painter of seas.

Together we’ll bring sugars and structures

To help each other rise

We’ll bring forests and statues

To keep this funny thing alive.

And I’m liking lichen

The pairing of fungi and algae,

You be the fungi I’ll be the painter of seas.

Together we’ll bring sugars and structures

To help each other rise.
